Addy...Chapter 2...The Puppies
Yep, Addy had been taken advantage by an unknown neighborhood Romeo. She was little more than a puppy herself...a little over a year old, but she was going to be a mother. The fact that she had not been spayed kind of pissed me off...what were her people thinking I wondered. ..coupled with the fact that Addy was allowed to roam free...? I was glad she had that freedom, but besides the danger, there are the animal control folks to worry about. I do know now how much her people care about her... I'll fill in the details about this later. But back to the pregnancy. Addy just got fatter and fatter. We knew that soon there would be a bunch of little puppies but we didn't even consider that the number would be nine. Nine! It didn't seem possible that all those little puppies could possibly have fit...like I said ..Addy is a small dog.
We had been in contact with Addy's family and they promised that they would let us know when the big day came. We didn't see Addy for three or four days when our phone rang with the news...they were here! We went to see Addy's puppies, all nine of them, and all healthy. Addy was very excited to see us and seemed to understand that we had not only come to see her, but to see her puppies. Addy has an expressive face. She can smile..I swear she can. And she was smilin' big.
Over the next few weeks, we made a few trips down the street to see those puppies. They were growing like kudzu. Then, one morning while I was trimming some bushes in the yard, I saw Addy coming up our drive. She had the puppies with her! They were barely old enough to get around, but she had the whole bunch of then with her. It was a cute sight, but this won't do I thought. I piled everybody into my car and took them home. We live in a neighborhood with large yards. Three or four houses down the street is quite a walk, but Addy was determined to come to see me and those puppies were determined to follow their mother. Sometimes I would take them all home and sometimes their people would come and get them. The puppies were soon at the "free puppy to a good home" size. They had been weaned and the search was on for homes for everybody. In the meantime, they went with Addy when she roamed the hood. I almost worried myself sick. Why weren't the Wiggins' keeping Addy and the puppies locked up...or at least the puppies? I'll never figure that out.
Next installment...Addy takes her puppies swimming.

We're waiting.
