The fifty cent dollar
As our dollar loses value, which it has been doing with remarkable efficiency lately, the tendency is to associate that weakening with a poor economy. It's true that we are spending money we don't have...over spending equals weak dollar. It is curious to me that this situation can also stimulate our economy. Lower dollar value means that foreign money buys more stuff here. Our goods are cheaper on the world market, so they are a bargain, so we sell more of the products. One of our products that can be a great bargain is ownership of our companies...another is our real estate. Don't worry too much about our companies...most of them need selling anyway. As for the real estate, we can buy it back later, when the dollar is stronger. And the dollar will be stronger. It will recover.
Still...having a weak dollar is not good if compared to having a strong dollar. It's embarrassing. We have always made fun of countries with weak currency value. Now we are one of them. I'm going to act like I just don't have any notion of what all the fuss is about. First time I have to pay $8 for a cup of coffee because the coffee growers won't accept the dollar anymore...I'll just throw down eight dollars and go on. Maybe I'll even get used to that 'I've just had asshole sex feeling' . I had a huge dose of 'that' feeling yesterday when I fueled up the ole Slim- mobile.
I'll go to the grocery today and buy one dollar each apples, five dollar a loaf bread (OK..this bread is worth it), three dollar a pound tomatoes, ten dollar a pound lunch meat...three bags of groceries...$125..easy. The only bargain is bananas. Bananas are always about 50 cents a pound. I don't know how this happens. Maybe they'll go to 79 cents but usually they are about 50 cents. Seems like they've been this price for a long time. Why does an apple, that was grown 50 miles from where I live, cost a dollar, and a pound of bananas, which was grown half way around the world, cost 50 cents? I plan to offset the low dollar amount of the bananas with the purchase of some high dollar ice cream.
So, as you pass out money today...don't let it bother you. Just shrug as you brace yourself for "that feelin"...
