I'm Just Sayin'

Bill Maher has published, in Rolling Stone, a list of "Dickheads of the Year". I think this is a great idea. My ole buddy Gita from Alabama and I have been discussing the qualifications for dickhead status and the reasons behind the dickheadedness of some people. Gita believes that dickheads are natural born. I think I agree with Gita on this, but it doesn't really matter too much. A dickhead is a dickhead.

In thinking back over dickheads I have known, one particular dickhead stands out in my mind as a dickhead worth listing in a Directory of Dickheads.... James G. Watt. James Gaius Watt served as Secretary of the Interior under President Ronald Reagan from 1981 to 1983.  

Watt is a multifaceted dickhead and I can't go into all his dickheadedness. Briefly...Watt is a Pentecostal, anti environment, anti- First Amendment, self righteous  dickhead...but the dickheaded activity I want to talk about is his 1983 banning of the Beach Boys concert in the National Mall in Washington. Watt said that rock concerts drew "an undesirable element". (The Beach Boys had played the Mall on the Fourth the previous two years.)  Nancy Reagan later apologized to the Beach boys  for the actions of Watt and the Beach boys played again in 1984. Seems like Ronnie invited the Beach Boys to come and play at the White House which I think they did. James G. Watt....dickhead.

Watt was asked to resign his position as Secretary of the Interior after he gave a speech, on September 21, 1983, in which he  made this statement about a senate advisory panel: "I have a black, a woman, two Jews and a cripple. And we have talent."  He submitted his letter of resignation a few weeks later. What a guy! In 1995, Watt was indicted on 25 counts of felony perjury and obstruction of justice by a federal grand jury. He plea bargained out a 5 year probation, $5000 fine, and 500 hours of community service.

If a dickhead award is ever designed...a dickhead statue...I propose that the dickhead on that dickheaded statue be the bust of James G. Watt, dickhead.  We could hand out the Watt Dickhead Award every week or so.  I know there are really too many dickheads out there to list, but we can go ahead and shine the spotlight on as many dickheads as we can. Maybe we can eventually have Congress proclaim a National Dickhead Day. My concept of that day would be to have the Dickhead of the Year go on T.V. and take the Watt Dickhead Award and dickhead himself with it.
