Riots and Mass Movements
In order to have a riot, someone must be able to incite a riot. A riot is an extreme form of mass movement, but all mass movements require the same basic catalysts and they require the efforts of someone who can excite the people... or incite them to action. I believe Barack Obama has seized the opportunity to cause a mass movement by his ability to excite us with the promise of a new beginning. He has seized upon the discontent of America with the present and promised a better tomorrow...or not just a better tomorrow, but a fresh start...big change. We are frustrated by our present set of circumstances...it's all bad. The current administration and it's lies and deceit, the lack of economic health, which further declines everyday...the war in which we are engaged and were conned into entering...the stagnant cesspool we call Congress, crooked politicians...Ok on this one..what's new?....but all these negatives act as a catalyst for reform. The worse our circumstance the more receptive we are for the promise of change, and that's where Obama shines.
His is a new face... he is young. He hasn't the baggage of years of Washington experience. This lack of experience is, in Obama's case, a positive attribute. He's not one of "them" and he is the only candidate who is not one of "them". He is bright , well spoken and good looking. The rest of the candidates look tired and run down. Obama is the embodiment of what he is selling. His appeal is so strong that he is able to cause the excitement of all ages of people and all races. He has struck America colorblind.
My point is that once the excitement has reached this critical momentum, the issues will become less important than the promise of change. The issues will important but will be secondary to the surge of a movement for unification and the common goal of ridding ourselves of our present so that we can step into our future armed with new hope and ambition.
It is the attitude of the people that is responsible for the general health of a country. If we think things are bad, they will become bad. If we think things are good and we have that Norman Vincent Peale "can do...positive attitude"...we will overcome our problems with the shear force of that positive will. We spend money when we think things are good. The stock market benefits from both consumer spending and consumer confidence. Business grows and new jobs become available when money circulates.
This election is more about attitude than policy. Obama has offered us the "YES WE CAN" state of mind and we are jumping all over it. Good for us.
